In summary, there are several degree courses that can help you cross to nursing, including Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), Diploma in Practical Nursing (PN), Bachelor of Science in Health Science, Bachelor of Science in Biology, and Bachelor of Science in Psychology. These degree programs provide a solid foundation in nursing theory and practice, as well as a broad understanding of healthcare, biology, and psychology.

There are three main ways to cross into nursing, which are:

  1. Direct Entry (JAMB DE or Part-Time DE)
  2. Change of Course When Going to 200-level
  3. Change Course Through Transfer Admission

Let’s explore each of these methods in detail.

  1. Crossing to Nursing with Direct Entry
Direct Entry is a method of gaining admission into a university without going through the UTME process. Using this method, you can complete your first degree before obtaining the JAMB direct entry form. Through the JAMB direct entry form, you can consider the universities of your interest. You can process your direct entry admission into another university than where you finished the first degree or the same university where you had your first degree (if nursing is available there).

If you have a BSc in any of the following courses, you can use that to obtain the direct entry form into Nursing Science:

  • Human Anatomy
  • Physiology and Hygiene
  • Health Science
  • Health Education
  • Public Health
  • Medicine and Surgery
  • Pharmacy
  • Biological Sciences
  • Physiotherapy

Many universities that accept degrees in these courses don’t make it always public even if you check the official JAMB brochure. However, experience has shown that with these qualifications, you can walk into any university offering nursing science and enquire if they’ll honor you for Nursing. Admission offices are open to all prospective applicants.

In the JAMB brochure, however, these universities state lower qualifications, as listed below, as their DE admission requirements:

  • Registered Nursing (RN) (for all universities)
  • Registered Midwifery (for a few universities especially private e.g. Adeleke University Ede)
  • ND/HND in Nursing (e.g. run by schools of Nursing accepting JAMB)
  • HND/OND in Prosthesis and Orthopaedic Technology
  1. Change of Course When Going to 200-level
Another way to cross to nursing is by changing your course when going to 200-level. This method is only applicable to students who have completed their first year in a university and want to change their course to nursing. The student must meet the requirements of the university and the nursing department.
  2. Change Course Through Transfer Admission
This method is for students who have completed their first year in a university and want to transfer to another university to study nursing. The student must meet the requirements of the university and the nursing department.
